Hemmed in by the lush green hills of the Aravalis, drenched in romance and beauty, Udaipur
is a fascinating blend of sights, sounds and experiences. The city of fairy tale palaces,
lakes, temples, gardens, and narrow lanes strewn with stalls, carry the flavor of a great
past, epitomizing valor and chivalry. Set, as it is, on three beautiful lakes and
surrounded by an amphitheater of hills, Udaipur, today is one of the most picturesque
cities in India. Known for its terracotta
artists, the Udaipur bazaar can throw up a lot of pleasant surprises like the special
lahariya (or wave patterned) tie-and-dye fabrics
and brightly colored toys called pichhvais. Places to
visit
City Palace
The imposing City palace, towering over the lake Pichhola, is the largest palace complex
in Rajasthan. A conglomeration of courtyards, pavilions, terraces, corridors, rooms and
gardens. The palace museum contains a wonderful collection of old Rajput weaponry. The Mor
Chowk with its beautiful mosaics of peacocks. The Manak Mahal has inlay glass and mirror
work while Krishna Vilas has a remarkable collection of miniatures.
Lake
Palace
This marvel in white is the jewel in the crown of Udaipur City. Situated at the heart of
Lake Pichhola this summer palace of the royal times, showcases the ultimate luxury with
elegant courtyards, fountains gardens with lotus ponds and is easy to fall in love with.
Jagdish Temple
Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, this fine Indo-Aryan temple enshrines black stone image of
Vishnu as Jagannath-Lord of the universe. A small shrine opposite to the temple entrance
houses an excellent bronze statue of Garuda, the mythical bird that was the vehicle of
Lord Vishnu.
Saheliyon Ki Bari
This small ornamental garden was built for the maids of honor. With fountains, chiseled
kiosks, marble elephants and delightful lotus pools, it was once used as the royal picnic
spot.
Shilp Gram
A Craft village, displaying traditional houses from all over Rajasthan, Gujrat and
Maharashtra (two of Rajasthan's neighboring states). Craftsmen can be seen at work, giving
live demonstration of making beautiful handicrafts like wooden toys, embroidery, carpets, leather articles and pottery.
Rajasthan's vibrant folk music and dance can also be enjoyed here.
Bhartiya Lok Kala Mandal
This small museum is run by a foundation for the preservation and promotion of folk arts
of Rajasthan. It includes puppets,
ancient musical instruments, paintings,
folk attires and ornaments.
