Wildlife
For all one's inclination to believe that Rajasthan is a desert, it is difficult to ignore
the fact that the region, in fact, has a varied topography, and includes from arid, desert
like conditions to among the oldest mountains in the world, and lush, water filled
valleys. No wonder too that its wildlife is so rich in variety, which hold some exotic
species. The hunting retreats for the maharaja's providing regular sports are now
protected areas housing a great variety of species.
Magnificent
Animals
Rajasthan's amazingly varied wildlife is often symbolized by one of the most
magnificent animals of the cat's family, the Tiger. With its awesome
power and beautiful patterned golden coat, it effortlessly impresses everyone. Ranthambor Tiger Reserve and Sariska
National Park are the best places to see this majestic animal in action.
Going on the trails of tiger are many impressive species including panther, leopard,
desert fox, striped hyena, jackal, wolf, caracal, crocodile, sambhar, black buck, chital,
nilgai and sloth bear.
Exotic Birds
Thousands of migratory waterfowl arrive every winter at the world-famous Keoldeo Ghana Bird Sanctuary. The star attraction is the rare Siberian
Crane which flies an amazing 3,900 miles to reach the marshland of the sanctuary
in a two month journey. Other
birds include Painted Storks, Spoonbills, Cormorants, Egrets, Herons, Ibis and
Kingfishers. There are numerous places, like Kheechan, which
attract birds like Demoiselle Cranes and Flamingos.
With its beautiful plumage, the Peacock (India's National Bird) is
a marvelous sight, especially when it is dancing. And the State Bird of Rajasthan, the Great
Indian Bustard can easily be spotted in the desert areas of the state.
Protected Areas
There are many wildlife sanctuaries and reserves all over the Rajasthan, they all
house great variety flora and fauna to the wildlife lovers' delight...
